9.5.10 Walcha to Byron Bay

Misty start to the day, hit a green bird that went into the forks, not such a great way to view wildlife but it does allow a close up view. Armidale for breakfast very ordinary and slow costing a lot of time and not very good food. Waterfall way was an awesome motorbiking road, big sweeping corners with an excellent surface which made it feel like a lazy roller coaster. We stopped to have a look at one lot of falls at Ebor which gave a real surprise to see a deep gorge beside where we had been riding, as it felt like a plateau. Then after the turn off to Coffs Harbour we entered a long area of sharp corners without speed warnings, a bit like Queen Charlotte road in the Marlborough sounds, very difficult to judge but great fun all the same. Road surface was really variable here which added to the challenge. We stopped at a country cafĂ© set up in an old Church with a camp couple serving good coffee. On down to Byron bay after a brew. The traffic was well behaved apart from one cantankerous Ford Fairlane driver wanting to hold everyone up and then speeding on the passing lane! Beware the car driver wearing the wide brimmed hat. Into Byron Bay “is there a Hippy Convention going on?”. Nice beach and bay with lots of partying people and a few very non conventional looking folks. Strong smell of incense? Heaps of people out surfing. Decided to stop as I was buggered, and it was not far off dark. Found a guest house with a Bali theme. As we were heading out for a feed, the skies opened with a tropical down pour for a few minutes then into town for a mixed grill Byron Style, quite flash, couple of beers and some wine later. ZZZZZZZ. 442km total 886km
